Milacaıs softball team closed out regular-season action by topping Mora 5-2 in a Rum River Conference game Wednesday, May 14, at Mora before tipping St. Cloud Cathedral 3-2 in a non-conference game Thursday, May 15, at Sod Park in Milaca.

The Wolves finished the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and 5-7 Rum River mark.

Milaca, which had the No. 1 seed, was scheduled to face Pine City in the semifinals of the Sub-Section 18 Tournament Tuesday at Foley. The Wolves had a bye in the opening round.

Pine City, seeded No. 5, topped fourth-seeded Mora 6-0 in the quarterfinals Friday at Mora. No. 2-seeded Big Lake stopped seventh-seeded Becker 2-0 at Big Lake and sixth-seeded Foley trimmed third-seeded Braham 16-3 at Braham in other quarterfinal games. Foley and Big Lake were scheduled to meet in Tuesdayıs other semifinal game.

The sub-section title game is today (Thursday) at 5 p.m. at Whitney Park in St. Cloud.

The top two teams in Sub-Section 18 will advance to the Section 6AA Tournament, along with the top two teams from Sub-Section 19.

The semifinals in the 6AA meet are Tuesday, May 29, at Whitney Park. The Sub-Section 18 and Sub-Section 19 champions will meet in one semifinal game, with the second-place teams facing each other in the other semifinal game. The 6AA Tournament is double elimination; however the second-place teams from the two sub-sections will each enter play with one loss.

Last year, Big Lake gained a berth to the Class AA State Tournament by tipping Milaca 3-0 in the 6AA championship game.

Milaca 5, Mora 2

Junior right-hander Sara Fogel pitched the distance, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. Both Mora runs were unearned.

Milaca scored a run in the top of the first inning, then moved to a 5-0 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Seniors Whitney Bekius and Chelsey Coffee and junior Stacee Nelsen each had a pair of hits to lead Milacaıs 10-hit offense. Sophomore center fielder Andria Strenge drove in a pair of runs and second baseman junior Sadie Hemmerich was involved in three defensive double plays.

Milaca 3, Cathedral 2

Fogel again pitched the distance, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Milaca scored solo runs in the first, third and fourth innings while the Crusaders tallied solo runs in the third and fifth frames.

Hemmerich, Bekius and sophomore grader Jenny Kortus each had a pair of hits, with Bekius driving in two runs.

³It was a good way to close out the regular season,² said Milaca Coach Randy Johnson. ³Cathedral has a good team.²
