Be ready for an aerobic workout Tim Poorker Believe it or not, when it comes to ice fishing with me, one receives a real aerobic workout, complete with grunting, sweating, rapid heart rate and the lingering thought of "this is another fine mess he has gotten me into!" My fish house is constructed of wood and canvas and, although it is technically of the portable design, it is better suited to be sitting on a cement foundation as a permanent structure. In short, it is heavy. So much so that some of my friends affectionately refer to it as the "mobile home" or "the hernia maker." In fact, it has been directly linked as the cause of more than one hernia operation. What helps to make this ice shack so heavy is its design. Wood forms the base and makes up each end of the house and canvas covers the rest. There is a door in each end that adds to the weight but those same doors make the shack very versatile. Two entrances/exits are nice because if you see a DNR Conservation Officer coming up to one of them, you can easily and conveniently slip out of the other. (Just kidding!) Where the aerobic benefits of fishing with me come into play, of course, is from lifting, dropping, pulling, sliding and setting up or taking down "the mobile home." It makes you sweat. Your heart will beat like a rabbit and your blood pressure will rise like a thermometer on a hot day. It is guaranteed to make grown men grunt like a pig and cry like a baby when they help me with "the hernia maker." I have even heard some words uttered under the weight and stress of handling my fish house, words that I have never heard before. So, if you are looking to go ice fishing and get an aerobic workout that will leave you as limp as a dishrag, give me a call. I will be happy to take you along because, oddly enough, my friends don't want to ice fish with me anymore.
