Posted 3/6/03

Third-seeded Hinckley-Finlayson withstood a third-quarter Milaca rally and topped the sixth-seeded Wolves 43-34 in the quarter-finals of the Section 6AA Sub-Section 18 Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday night, Feb. 25, at Hinckley.

Milaca, which trailed 24-16 at halftime, ran off nine-straight points to take a 25-24 lead in the third quarter. Maggie Doty, an eighth grade forward, started the string with a three-point play while junior center Lyz Teschís basket completed the nine-point string to give the Wolves the lead.

However, Hinckley-Finlayson then put together an eight-point run to take a 32-25 edge into the fourth quarter.

"We got the lead by playing tight defense and converting our chances on offense," said Milaca Coach Jamie Taylor. "But, our shooting turned cold again and Hinckley-Finlayson pulled away.

"I felt we held our own in a rough, physical game. In the end our shooting did us in. We got the shots but they didnít drop."

Tesch led the Wolves with 10 points and 14 rebounds while Doty scored seven points and had eight rebounds. Tesch also blocked four shots.

Milaca shot just 19.4 percent (12-for-62) from the field while the Jaguars shot 35.6 percent (16-45). Milaca had a 37-26 edge in rebounds.

Milaca finished the season with a 4-19 record.
