Contest spotlights
importance of
wildlife lifelines
Minnesota youngsters in grades 7 and 8 are encouraged to portray their view of how roadside ditches are important for many wildlife species through the 19th annual Department of Natural Resources "Roadsides are for the Birds" poster contest, which is now underway.

The popular poster contest has proven to be an effective means of teaching youngsters and adults about the importance of roadside habitat, said Ken Varland, DNR regional wildlife manager at New Ulm.

"Roadside habitat can provide virtual lifelines for many wildlife and plant species," Varland said.

Generally conducted through art and science programs in local school systems, the contest attracts entries from students throughout Minnesota.

"Last year, 98 students from 40 schools submitted posters in the contest," Varland said. "We're hoping for even more this year."

Both student winners and their schools are awarded prizes, including framed wildlife art prints.

Those who have not received information about the contest are encouraged to contact Larinda Burg at (507) 359-6035.
