Hi-Way Cafe latest to go smoke-free

The Hi-Way Cafe is the latest in Milaca to go smoke-free. Beginning Thursday, Jan. 2, customers of the restaurant will dine in a completely smoke-free environment.

According to owner Lance Erickson, the reason was two-fold.

"Mostly, itís because of customer complaints. Iíve watched people come in and turn around and walk out because of the smoke."

Erickson also said the upcoming changes to smoking laws in restaurants influenced his decision.

Hobnettiís Pizza and Hardeeís of Milaca also went smoke-free this year.

According to a press release by Mille Lacs County Public Health, food service workers in restaurants that allow smoking have a 50 percent greater risk of developing lung cancer due to second-hand smoke.
