Wolves win consolation title at meet

Milaca topped Atwater-Grove City-Cosmos 71-59 to claim the consolation title at the annual Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday at Howard Lake. The Wolves lost to Meadow Creek Christian School of Andover 64-59 in the first round of the tournament Thursday, Dec. 26, then stopped Minnesota Transitions of Minneapolis 66-59 in the consolation semifinals Friday. Host Howard Lake-Waverly trimmed Meadow Creek 72-62 in the championship game Saturday while Annandale topped Dassel-Cokato 55-37 in the third place game and Minnesota Transitions rolled over Community of Peace Academy of Minneapolis 83-34 in the seventh-place game. Milaca 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Rum River Conference play, resumes conference play at St. Michael-Albertville Tuesday night, Jan. 7, at 7:30. The Wolves travel to Mora for another RRC game Friday, Jan. 10, at 7:30. Milaca 71, AGCC 59 The Wolves moved to a 35-30 halftime lead before outscoring Atwater-Grove City-Cosmos 19-13 in the third quarter to take a 54-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Senior center Eric Bergstrom and junior guard Brent Baas scored 17 points each to lead the Wolves while sophomore guard Adam Ruis added 12 points. Senior guard Tim Veurink and senior forward Jon Matthews each had eight points. Baas had five three-point baskets while Veurink and Ruis each had one. Milaca 66, Minn. Transitions 59 Bergstrom scored 36 points to lead Milaca while Veurink added 10 points and junior Daren Koppendrayer sank a pair of three-point baskets and finished with six points. Meadow Creek 64, Milaca 59 The Wolves took a 31-27 halftime lead before being outscored 12-7 in the third quarter and 25-21 in the fourth quarter. Bergstrom lead Milaca with 25 points.
