K-9 handlers receive awards Mille Lacs County Deputies Bill Hawley and Terry Boltjes, along with their respective canines, Taz and Keeya, received awards at the recent U.S. Police Canine Region 12 winter banquet. The four were recognized at the dinner in Brainerd on Saturday, Jan. 25 for apprehensions and narcotics finds for the third and fourth quarters of 2002. Hawley and K-9 Taz received three medallions and one citation for their work as a team. Boltjes and K-9 Keeya received three medallions and four citations for their efforts. Both Hawley and Boltjes were selected for the "Case of the Quarter" for the fourth quarter. The award was given for the arrest of three suspects at the anhydrous ammonia plant near Long Siding, in which both officers were injured during the apprehension. The handlers are proud of their efforts, with Hawley adding, "We want to thank former sheriff Dennis Boser for all of his support."
