Milaca loses to Foley, Big Lake, Milacaís girls basketball team dropped two Rum River Conference basketball games last week, losing at Foley 63-40 Tuesday, Jan. 21 before falling to Big Lake 51-41 Friday at Milaca. The setbacks dropped Milacaís record to 1-14 overall and 1-9 in conference play. And, looming next for the Wolves is state-ranked North Branch Tuesday night, Feb. 4, at Milaca. North Branch, which topped Milaca 52-30 Dec. 13 at North Branch, is 9-1 in RRC play and 15-2 overall. The Vikings are battling Chisago Lakes (16-1, 10-0) for first place in the Rum River. North Branch is ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Class AAA girls state poll while Chisago Lakes is No. 6. "It will be another big challenge for us," said Milaca Coach Jamie Taylor. "North Branch has an excellent team. "But, weíve got to hang in there. We need to stay positive and try to avoid long breakdowns. We play well for a time but then we have extended breakdowns. Against Foley we played very well in the first half and against Big Lake we got off to a great start in the first quarter." Foley 63, Milaca 40 The Wolves trailed 15-12 after the first quarter but cut the Falconsí lead to 26-25 at halftime. Foley, then changed its defense and outscored Milaca 17-8 in the third quarter and 20-7 in the final quarter. "We handled Foleyís zone well in the first half but we didnít do a good job when they went to a man-to-man defense in the second half," said Taylor. "The first half was our best half of the season but in the second half we couldnít get the ball to our inside players and Foley took charge." Senior guard Katie Helmin led Milaca with 13 points while junior center Lyz Tesch scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked five shots. The Wolves shot 34 percent from the field (17-for-50) and made just five of 15 free-throw attempts. Jenna Thorsness led Foley with 18 points. Foley, which moved its record to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in RRC play, shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the field while making nine of 16 free throws. The Falcons had a 24-17 edge in rebounds. Big Lake 51, Milaca 41 The Wolves, behind six points from Tesch, moved to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter before the Hornets stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring Milaca 20-6 to take a 26-20 halftime lead. Big Lake added to its margin with a 9-6 scoring edge in the third quarter. "We didnít play too poorly after the first quarter but Big Lake played very well," said Taylor. "They started hitting their shots and they started to beat us on the boards." Tesch led Milaca with 15 points while eighth grade guard Maggie Doty scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
