Posted 1/23/03

Milacaís boys basketball team will bid for a regular-season sweep over Foley when it hosts the Falcons in a Rum River Conference boys basketball game tonight (Thursday) at 7:30.

The Wolves tipped Foley 63-60 in the season opener for both teams Dec. 6 at Foley.

"We have our work cut out for us," said Milaca Coach Jeff Meyer, whose team was at Princeton Tuesday night. "Weíve improved since that first game and so has Foley. Theyíre probably the hottest team in the conference right now."

Last week, Milaca won a pair of RRC games, stopping Chisago Lakes 60-48 Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Chisago Lakes before trimming Pine City 82-40 Friday night at Milaca. Those wins boosted Milaca to a 5-2 conference record and 8-3 overall mark.

Foley also won twice last week as it topped North Branch 62-56 in overtime Tuesday at North Branch, then rocked Princeton 78-58 Friday at Foley. The Falcons are 8-5 overall and 4-3 in RRC play.

Senior center Eric Bergstrom and senior guard Tim Veurink scored 19 points each to lead Milaca in its win at Foley while senior guard Bryan Moshier led Foley with 16 points.

Moshier had the hot hand in Foleyís wins last week as he scored 22 points in both games. He hit five three-point baskets against North Branch and four against Princeton.

"Foley has a lot of threats--weíll have to play another strong defensive game," said Meyer. "Our defense carried us against Chisago Lakes. We played well on offense and defense against Pine City."

The Wolves trailed 31-30 at halftime but moved ahead by outscoring the Wildcats 17-10 in the third quarter.

Veurink led Milaca with 19 points while Bergstrom scored 16 and sophomore guard Jon Moorlag had nine points. Bergstrom also had seven rebounds while Moorlag had five.

""It was a big win because Chisago Lakes is always tough on its home court," said Meyer.

Milaca 82, Pine City 40

The Wolves took charge right away, moving to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and 38-18 margin at halftime.

Milaca shot 50 percent (29-for-58) from the field while making 17 of 28 free throws.

Veurink, who sank three three-pointers, scored 20 points while junior guard Daren Koppendrayer had 12 points, sophomore guard Adam Ruis had 11 and Bergstrom totaled 10. Senior forward Jon Matthews had nine points and five rebounds.
