Milaca claims first win,
handles PC in overtime

Milaca outscored Pine City 6-2 in the overtime session as it claimed its first win of the season by topping the Dragons 60-56 in a Rum River Conference girls basketball game Friday at Milaca.

"Weíve worked hard and it paid off with a win," said Milaca Coach Jamie Taylor. "I think getting that first victory will take some pressure off us."

Milaca went into Fridayís game with a 0-10 record after losing to state-ranked Chisago Lakes 50-42 Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Milaca.

Milaca, 1-10 overall and 1-6 in RRC play, travels to Princeton tonight (Thursday) at 7:30. The Wolves continue RRC play Tuesday night at Foley, at 7:30.

"These are games we can win," said Taylor. "We have to cut down our mistakes and continue to hustle and work hard."

Milaca, which trailed 33-26 at halftime, outscored Pine City 14-3 in the third quarter to 40-36 lead into the final quarter. The Dragons had an 18-14 edge in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

Junior centers Lyz Tesch and Jamie Hubers each scored three points for Milaca in the overtime.

Tesch, whose basket with eight seconds left in regulation tied the score at 54-54 to send the game into overtime, led Milaca with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Hubers added 12 points and six rebounds while senior guard Katie Helmin had nine points and senior forward Kelly Doty scored eight points and grabbed
eight rebounds.
The Wolves had a 49-26 edge in rebounds.
"We really hit the boards well and we never quit working," said Taylor.

Milaca held an 18-17 lead at halftime and trailed just 35-32 after three quarters against Chisago Lakes, which is ranked No. 7 in the Class AAA state ratings.
Helmin led the Wolves with 15 points while Tesch scored five points and had 10 rebounds. Hubers added six points and four rebounds.
Chisago Lakes boosted its record to 12-1 overall, 9-0 in the RRC
