Milaca took an early lead and built on it as it trimmed Mora 63-43 in a Rum River Conference boys basketball game Friday night at Milaca.

"Mora was coming off big wins over Foley and Braham and we didnít want it to catch fire against us, too," said Milaca Coach Jeff Meyer. "We wanted to come out with solid defense right away and we did.

"And, once we got the lead we were able to pull away. Mora had been playing very well so it was a big win for us."

The Wolves led 14-10 after the opening quarter, then moved in front 31-19 at halftime. A 19-7 scoring edge in the third quarter gave Milaca a 50-26 margin heading into the fourth quarter.

Senior center Eric Bergstromís 20 points led the Wolves while senior guard Tim Veurink scored 12 points and sophomore guard Adam Ruis and senior forward Jon Matthews each scored nine points.

"We had good scoring balance and, overall, we played a pretty good game," said Meyer.

Senior guard Josh Oslinís 12 points led the Mustangs.

The win boosted Milaca to a 13-5 overall record and 9-3 Rum River mark.

Milaca, which was scheduled to host St. Michael-Albertville Tuesday, hosts Chisago Lakes tonight (Thursday) at 7:30.

Milaca travels to Pine City Monday night at 7:30, then closes the regular season at home against Princeton Friday, Feb. 28, at 7:30. The game at Pine City was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25 but was changed because of a conflict with the Sub-Section 18 Girls Tournament.

"You always want to close the regular season on a strong note and thatís our goal heading into sub-section play," said Meyer.

The Sub-Section 18 Tournament is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 4.
