Mille Lacs County had a good turnout at the polls, with 10,386 of the 12,741 registered voters showing up to cast their ballots.
The races for county attorney and county sheriff were close, but in the end Jan Kolb and Brent Lindgren were the winners.
County Attorney
Milaca resident Jan Kolb will be the new Mille Lacs County Attorney Jan. 1, 2003.
Kolb, who received 5,153 votes, beat out Princeton resident Todd Pierce, who ended up with 4,433.
"It was a long night," Kolb said of last weekís election.
Kolb waited anxiously for the Princeton results, saying she felt good about the rest.
And Kolb was right at Pierceís back in Princeton, receiving 721 votes, just 20 votes behind Pierce.
"I thought it might have been even closer," Kolb said of the overall total votes she and Pierce received.
"I am so thankful and overwhelmed by the support and the help from everyone. I feel humbled."
Kolb has already met informally with the county attorney assistants and plans to schedule meetings with them and the current county attorney Janelle Kendall during the transition.
Kendall was elected Stearns County Attorney, but because the race was so close (Kendall received 147 more votes than Mary Yunker), the votes will be recounted at Yunkerís request.
Pierce said, "I congratulate Jan Kolb for her election as Mille Lacs County Attorney and wish her success. I also want to thank the people who assisted me in my candidacy for that same office and those who endured my campaign signs in their yards. Finally, I want to say it has been a pleasure to get acquainted, or reacquainted, with so many residents of Mille Lacs County, which would not have occurred without this campaign."
