Milaca rolls in sub-section opener

Milaca rode the one-hit pitching of senior right-hander Angela Vedders and an 11-hit attack to a 10-0 win over Pine City in the quarter-finals of the Section 6AA, Sub-Section 18 Softball Tournament Friday at Sod Park in Milaca.

It was Milacaís third shutout win over the Dragons this season.

The Wolves, seeded No. 2, were scheduled to face third-seeded Becker in the semi-finals Tuesday at Big Lake. Becker, 10-6, topped Mora 14-1 in the opening round Friday.

Fifth-seeded Foley tipped fourth-seeded Braham 6-5 in Fridayís other quarter-final game. The Falcons were scheduled to face No. 1-seeded Big Lake in the semi-finals Tuesday at Big Lake.

The title game in the tournament is today (Thursday) at 5 p.m. at Whitney Park in St. Cloud. The top two teams in the sub-section meet advance to the Section 6AA Tournament, which begins Tuesday, May 28, at Whitney Park.

Vedders walked just one and struck out seven against Pine City.

The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning before adding seven runs in the third. The game was called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

Senior second baseman Sara Rhoda and senior first baseman Katie VanHeel each had a double for Milaca, with Rhoda also notching three runs-batted-in.

Senior center fielder Ali Zimmer, senior left fielder Carla Larsen and junior right fielder Chelsey Coffee each added a pair of singles to Milacaís offense.

"We played well and took advantage of Pine Cityís errors," said Milaca Coach Randy Johnson.

Milaca carried a 10-6 overall record into Tuesdayís game against Becker.

Milaca placed third in the Rum River Conference with a 7-3 record. North Branch and Chisago Lakes both went 9-1 to share the 2002 title.
