Posted 8/16/02

Hundreds of motorcycles will converge on Mille Lacs Lake for the benefit of young children.

The 12th annual Mille Lacs Lake Motorcycle Toy Run takes place rain or shine Saturday, Aug. 24.

The dayís events begin with registration between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Onamia Vets Club at the junction of Highway 169 and Highway 27.

The 85-mile motorcycle ride begins promptly at 1 p.m. The bikers will go around the lake making a few stops along the way, including Hunterís Point near Isle, The Landing in Aitkin and the Blue Goose in Garrison.

The final destination is Chicoís Place, six miles south of Onamia on Highway 169. There will be a pig roast, door prizes, live music, and free camping.

Registration for riders (you need not be a biker to participate) is one new toy per person (or a cash donation).

Toys are given to local hospitals, the Childrenís Hospital, North Ambulance, state patrol, local law enforcement and the Onamia Fire Department for distribution in emergency situations.

The annual event began 12 years ago with 27 riders.

Last year over 750 riders hit the road for children, bringing in over 2,000 toys.

Lisa Teeler, owner of Chicoís and one of the organizers of the event, said, "Weíre hoping for 1,000 riders this year."

Myron Daiker of Onamia began the charity ride 12 years ago, along with Larry Karpen of Aitkin. Teeler has been involved for the last seven years.

For more information contact Daiker at 320-630-5655, Karpen at 218-927-6604 or Chicoís at 320-532-3535.
