Milaca girls claim District 18 track title

Milaca, powered by three victories in the relay events and six individual first places, captured the girls championship at the District 18, Section 5A Track and Field Meet Thursday, May 24, at Claffy Field in Milaca.

The Wolves, who were in a battle with St. Cloud Cathedral through most of the meet, rolled up 157 points to claim the title. Cathedral placed second with 129, followed by Foley with 121, Becker with 106, Pierz with 89, Royalton with 80 and St. Johnís Prep with eight points.

Cathedral won the boys title with 166 points while Becker finished second with 144. Foley nudged Milaca for third place as it totaled 101.5 and Milaca scored 101. Pierz finished fourth with 78 points, followed by Royalton with 65 and St. Johnís Prep with 33.5.

The top four placers in the individual events and the top two placers in the relays gained berths to the Section 5A Meet which was scheduled Wednesday at St. Johnís University at Collegeville.

Milacaís girls posted first places in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

In the 4x100-meter relay, senior DeAnn Manke, sophomore Casey Carlson, ninth grader Janelle Packard and senior Sarah Ruis combined for a time of 52.42 seconds. Becker was second at 53.22.

Ninth grader Amberly Hirsch, DeAnn Manke, Ruis and Carlson teamed up to win the 4x200 relay in 1:50.92. Becker was a distant second in 1:55.89.

Sophomore Jessi Struffert, Hirsch, sophomore Chrissy Dee and senior Faith Dalchow won the 4x400 relay in 4:13.85. Cathedral finished second in 4:20.39.

Struffert also nabbed a pair of individual firsts as she won the 400-meter run and the 800-meter run.

Struffert took the 400 title with a time of 59.68. Mindy Moulzolf of Foley was second in 1:02.65 and Dee placed fourth in 1:04.29.

Struffert won the 800 in 2:26.69. Sarah Domine of Cathedral was second in 2:35.10 and Hirsch placed fifth in 2:38.30.

DeAnn Manke won the 100-meter dash in 13.42. Emily Coborn of Cathedral placed second in 13.68 while Milaca ninth grader Amber Manke was fifth in 13.94 and Milaca senior Emma Braman was seventh in 14.19.

Milacaís Carlson won the 200 dash in 28.46 while Packard placed third in 29.09 and Ruis placed fourth in 29.12. April Jurek of Foley was second in 28.85.

Junior Sarah Johnson of Milaca won the triple jump with a jump of 33-feet, 2-inches while Carlson placed third with a jump of 32-5.

Johnson also placed second in the long jump with a jump of 14-11. Milacaís Hirsch placed seventh in the long jump with a jump of 13-5.

Junior Kristine Norberg of Milaca placed first in the pole vault with a height of 8-6. Milaca eighth grader Hannah Coffee was fifth at 7-6 and Wolves senior Alex Esselman was sixth, also at 7-6.

Dee gained a berth to the section meet by placing second in the high jump with a jump of 5-0. Ali Chmielewski of Foley was first, also at 5-0.

The Wolves also picked up points in the 300-meter hurdles where Esselman finished fifth in 52.70 and ninth grader Lauren Rohman was sixth in 54.00.

Once again, junior Craig Kotsmith paced Milacaís boys as he won the 200 and 400 events.

Kotsmith won the 200-meter dash in 23.82. Kyle Hamacher of Becker was second in 24.55 and Milaca sophomore Josh Arey was sixth in 25.90.

Kotsmith won the 400 in 52.24. Tony Lyon of Foley was second in 56.62.

Senior Adam Roehl notched Milacaís other first place as he won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.83. Mike Leither of Cathedral was second in 42.90 and Milaca sophomore Tony Swenson was fifth in 46.04.

Roehl was second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.28 while Swenson was fourth in 17.12. Dominic Hartjes of Cathedral was first in 15.61.

Roehl also advanced to the section meet in the triple jump as he finished third with a jump of 38-feet, one-half inch. Hartjes was first at 39-11.

Milacaís other individual qualifiers for the section meet were senior Tony Anderson, who placed fourth in the 800 run in 2:16.31, and junior Anthony Peterson, who placed fourth in the 3200-meter run in 11:07.68.

Peterson also placed fifth in the 1600 in 5:04.24 and Milaca junior Ryan Richter was fifth in the 800 in 2:18.28.

Milaca senior Chris Herbst placed seventh in the 100 in 12.53.

Milacaís 4x400 relay team of Arey, Roehl, senior Chuck Wojciechowski and Kotsmith placed second in 3:37.91 to gain a section berth.
